I'm puzzled (I know, it's a steady state for me) but how can the EN go from 75 to 79 with just one more ride? That implies you have done 78 rides of 79+ miles, in which case wouldn't your current EN be 78. Please bear in mind I abandoned A level maths on the basis I didn't understand it.

I've done 78 rides of more than 75 miles so doesn't that make my EN 75. However if I add one more ride of 79+ I'll then have done 79 rides of 79+ miles making my EN 79. I haven't done 78 rides of 78+ miles.

My head hurts. I'm going for a lie down.

75 rides of 75 makes your EN # 75
You would have needed to step up each time, ie 76 rides of 76 miles, 77 of 77, 78 off 78 etc so yes if you do have 79 of 79 then your e# is 79

So although I haven't done 78 rides of longer than 78 miles, I have done 77 rides longer than 77 miles so my EN is 77 I suppose.

I am going to stop thinking about this now.

Now I'm even more confused. If you haven't done 78 rides of 78+ miles, then one ride of 79+ miles can't make a total of 79 x 79+ miles. You must have done 78 x 79+ miles for one more ride to shift the EN to 79. I think. Possibly.

Eddington argued that the value of the fine-structure constant, α, could be obtained by pure deduction. He related α to the Eddington number, which was his estimate of the number of protons in the universe.[1] This led him in 1929 to conjecture that α was exactly 1/137. Other physicists did not adopt this conjecture and did not accept his argument.
