I have a specialized allez road bike for leisure, club runs, TTs etc but haven't quite worked out a commuter bike. I started with a hardtail mountain bike, moved to a 80's racer and have a rather knackered Subway which belonged to my son, which I'm half-heartedly refurbishing. It has needed more work than I first thought.

Anyway I'm changing jobs, will be commuting 2 miles, with the requirement to do some work miles as well - possibly including 10 mile plus each way trips. I don't know if there is safe storage or not at my new office.

Courtesy of a rather generous gift voucher from my current colleagues I have a bit of money to spend at Edinburgh Bike. I've taken a hankering for this. I'd rather have waited until I started my new job and was able to properly scout out the facilities and the amount of travelling involved, but Edinburgh Bike have 15% off this weekend, which increases the attraction.

Anyone got a Country traveller? How would it work for commuting, work use and general workhorse to complement my road bike?

One of the things which annoys me about commuting now is that I occasionally need to carry a laptop, so I like the rack and would buy panniers. I wouldn't be touring much, maybe a rare 2-3 day trip, but I'd possibly use it as a winter trainer on a particularly wet day - the Allez is used all year round.

I love the look of this bike, and was considering getting one too - maybe next year though! It's a good price for a tourer, and I've read some good reviews for it too.

Quite good looking bikes in the flesh too - I've had a look at them when I've popped into EBC.

Unless you are in a desperate rush for it EBC do have regular sale offers so it may well be on offer again.

EBC cleared out the 2011 models for £370 in January, the 2012 model was discounted to £430 a few weeks back. You have to be patient. Offers come around every few months. I ended up with a second hand 2011 Raleigh Royal in the end for £150.

I have owned one for just over a year now, using it day in, day out for commuting. I bought it for the same reasons you're thinking of, as a more practical commuter and workhorse as opposed to a full on road bike. The ride is comfy, the spec is good for the price (even more so with 15% off). It is a no-brainer

Thanks folks - I've gone and bought it. The 15% off ran out at 6 o'clock tonight, so I nipped home sharpish and went and bought one. Delivery in a weeks time. I now need to have a muck out and make room for it!
