Edinburgh's Cycling Hotspots

Here we go again - another cycling story in the Edinburgh Evening News and the usual comments are already flooding in

I cycle daily along the worst danger hotspot - and it's the place where you're least likely to see bad cycling (although there are a few idiots every now and again). However, it's where you'll most likely encounter the RLJ'ing / left-hooking / pulling out without looking / swerving around whilst on the mobile / speeding / racing each other motorists.

Go figure who's at fault most of the time here. I'd be interested to see how many car accidents there've been on that road in the last year - bet you it'll be more than the 11 cycling incidents (only two serious - and one of those two was a hit'n'run).

IMHO one of the problems with the Scotsman, Edinburgh Evening News, Scotland on Sunday mob is that their fora are populated by nuttters. I used to get annoyed but now I take comfort in the fact that circulation is falling so fast they'll soon be gone.

My only slight regret is that The Scotsman used to be a 'quality' paper but now it has become just a tool for its owners to bash SNP.

IMHO one of the problems with the Scotsman, Edinburgh Evening News, Scotland on Sunday mob is that their fora are populated by nuttters. I used to get annoyed but now I take comfort in the fact that circulation is falling so fast they'll soon be gone.

My only slight regret is that The Scotsman used to be a 'quality' paper but now it has become just a tool for its owners to bash SNP.

There are a few on there who do make me laugh - they manage to turn any thread into a surreal piece of Pythonesque comedy. But the others are seriously deranged / angry / frightening.

I think it'd be hilarious if the journos did a story on the 'real people' behind the fora and tracked some of these people down. But that would be too much like proper work for them. Like you say, the Scotsman used to be a quality paper and I used to buy it every day. About 8 years ago I stopped as the quality went down the toilet; when they began covering celeb stories on the front page or page 2, that was the final straw. I only buy the weekend Scotsman now for the TV pages for the week and for the Cryptic Crossword (though I still miss Peter Bee since he retired years ago !).

THis is my new favourite comment on the story:

"All cyclists should be made to wear the same head gear and leathers you would have if you were driving a motor bike also a big flashing light should be attached to the top of the helmet. If that would prevent someone from injury or death then it makes sense."

I'm not sure about their so called hot spots I cycle regularly along Ferry Road between Inverleith and Crew Toll and I have never had an incident ther, although my route doesnt regularly take me through Crewe Toll roundabout. I think the biggest problem I've had there which really isn't a problem is someone desperate to overtake only to get stuck behind a bus at a bus stop, holding me up when I could of cruised by. Lothian Road, at least once a week I'm up there too, no problem. Ive only ocaisionaly went down Leith Street/ Walk and other than road rage, I cant remember anything too serious.

I think I find the comments more amusing than the story

I think that cyclists WILL think that drivers are going fast but it is relative - 30mph IS fast compared to a cyclist going at 10mph (or even a "speeding" cyclist at 15mph).

If I read that one right cars never speed its all relevant to the speed of the bike
And reading the other posts drivers are perfect angels they never run red lights or mounts the pavements

They are. I Love Sellotape is on a roll with his (or her) comments right now:

How true, I gave up reading it years ago, I now take the Herald instead...

Dunfermline 14/05/2009 13:37:41 Ferry Road? Why on earth would anyone cycle on there, given that there's a perfectly good cycle track about 50 yards to the north?

I think you could go on all day, the path is a little further than 50 yds (try yards, as the crow flies), it doesn't actually take you where you want, its often covered in glass, I don't fancy neds (Chavs) throwing things at me, it often flooded/ icy and I sometimes want to travel faster (that sounds like a car driver ).

Anyone who suggest that cyclist should use "perfectly good cycle tracks" is obviously not a cyclist, other wise they would know why we choose to cycle on the road, it is usually faster...

I had a colleague who made similar comments a while back but since he got a bike through the cycle scheme he starting to see the light.
