Effing floor tiles!!

I've just spent the better part of today laying 600mm x 400mm x 12mm natural stone floor tiles in our kitchen, rear lobby and utility room. To say that my lower back ligaments and I are hardly on speaking terms would be a gross understatement!!
I only did the full tiles today so tomorrow I've got the cuts to do, then probably Wednesday I'll seal them and Thursday grout.
I've had a soak in the bath and am now off to kill the dregs of my Lagavulin, and if any other single malts cross my path I might well sample them too. Cheers!

How about your knees? Or is that another sore point...?

If you haven't got some already, do get some knee pads. They make a world of difference.

I'm on my third pair. The first two pairs were quite cheap, then I invested in a pair of these before tiling my own kitchen floor...

I could kneel all day on any surface quite comfortably. Just make sure the (non-elasticated, but wide and comfy) straps are adjusted for kneeling, not standing.

If you think that's fun, then try doing a curved cut in a floor tile.:evil::laugh:

I had to do several, some years ago. Normally when professional installers do a complete bathroom re-fit, they'll lay the floor tiles first, then put the bathroom furniture on top of the tiles. Saves a lot of awkward tile-cutting you see.

I didn't have that option, since I asked the installers to leave just a bare screed and chose to lay the tiles myself, once their work was finished. So all the furniture was in place and plumbed-in, and I had to cut arcs around toilet pedestal, washbasin stand, etc. etc.

I don't know if there's a quick way of cutting floor tiles in a curve. I used a saw. Floor tiles are much denser and more difficult to cut than wall tiles. It took hours upon hours upon hours.:ohmy:!

In the end I broke one of the tiles just as I was completing the cut. I just laid it as it was, break and all. Since it's round the back of the toilet pedestal it's not too visible.

Never again, though...

insulation between concrete and tiles????????????????????????????

Err, no, as far as I know you have to use tile adhesive, and I'm not aware of one which sticks tiles to insulation. I did consider undertile heating but didn't bother in the end and decided to buy some slippers instead

Mind and put plenty sealer round the edges of the tiles when sealing. Make sure you get the brush right into the joints as depending what grout you use, what tile it is and how porous it is, the mosture and colour in the grout can bleed into the tile hence creating a halo effect round each tile.

Not many people will ever notice but it will drive you nuts!!!

Top Tiling Tip from Greedo!
