Wobbles,
I work off Creek Road in Greenwich Quay. Last year we had some trouble with youths hanging around our office garden. We contacted Lewisham Safer Neighbourhood team. They are very good at dealing with these things.

Their direct numbers are
0207 1619390
07768 178244
The website is http://www.met.police.uk/teams/lewisham/evelyn/

I am sure you will get a better response if you called the SNT rather then 999

Gotta tell you, Mrs arallsopp and I moved from Deptford after we could no longer deal with the confrontation. Just running out of milk would trigger a conversation along the lines of:
"You going to Tescos after work?"
"No.. Can't deal with it today... I'll grab a couple of creamers from the office"

Didn't work so well with food, of course, and eventually we had to leave. I think the low point was going to an interview in town, mid morning, and getting two eggs, a waterbomb / condom, and an office chair thrown at me. The latter was off a balcony whilst I walked under it, and was pretty much the last straw. We soon learnt not to suit and boot for the day.

Not a massive fan of Deptford.

Thanks for the heartening replies.
Great stories too.;)

Luckily I didn't get hit so I wasn't really upset, just irritated - it was the distress these little toerags were causing. And the poor girl I spoke to was really effected.

These were all dark skinned youths - some looking more like adults and definitely not the kind you can 'have a word' with. Really aggressive pack behaviour. One on one would be a different matter, but a group of over a dozen yelling and jeering and chasing was very threatening.

I built up a good head of steam just before that street on the way home last night.....

Deptford is a shithole is it not?

The closest I've been is to the Chinese Elvis place in New Cross. That was bad enough.

Even Deptford does have the odd redeeming feature, The Dog & Bell pub in Prince St. for one, a secret little real ale pub, where, unlike most pubs in Deptford you don't get fights and they love cyclists, they even had the council put up half a dozen sheffield stands outside in full view of the windows for added security. An odd clientell of locals, cyclists and TV entertainers. (I was at a lock in there many years ago with Malcolm Hardee, Reves and Mortimer and Jools Holland amongst others)

However, I agree that for most of the rest of it, it's a shame that the 'architects' and planners of the 1960's were permitted to finish off what the Luftwaffe left behind.

Hi Wobbles report to Greenwich Council's Anti Social Behaviour (ASB TEAM)Team on 0208 854 8888. I know a very nice man there who loves to ride his bike and loves more so upsetting Gobby little 50yard heroes.

Luckily enough, I've not been on the receiving end of this as a cyclist.

I have at work, however. I used to work in a library and for some reason some clients didn't like being asked to lower their voices for the benefit of others. One day we came into work to discover the building had been egged. It wasn't nice.

What was nice was them being caught on CCTV. Scroats are dumb.

Sorry, but if anything like that happens to me, no matter how much they cry they aint getting let off, its an act to get them out of it, f*ck them if they launch projectiles at me they have started a chain of events that they need to know ends in consequences, our society is in a state as there is too much focus on the perpitrator and not the victim.

Imagine if you had shoved, pushed, slapped, cuffed, punched or kicked the little f*cker, he would be traumatised, couldnt go to school, on medication, claims for thousands of pounds made to make recompense for his ruined little life when a swift and decisive slap to the nose is the best medicine for his ailment, failing that some kind of caution or record to, in future remind the courts what they are dealing with when he moves on to more unpleasant crimes than making a two wheel Omlette.

I really take issue with someone getting their fun in assaulting others, trying to knock someone off a bike at 20 mph is serious, we have enough hazards that are passive without agressive ones so give them no quarter.

Happened to a friend and fellow cyclist of mine just down the road in Catford resulting in a broken nose, broken cheekbone and a cracked tooth.

Ah, Catford. Wonderful place, not.
I'd love to have been at the meeting when they decided on the plans for the Precinct. "Let's put a giant ****ing cat over the entrance". "Great idea, motion carried". You can actually see the thing on Google Earth. A giant ****ing cat.

Don't knock the Catford Cat, it's a masterpiece.
Catford isn't too bad in my experience. I've lived there 5 years and haven't experienced any nasty incidents yet or witnessed any street violence, though I tend to avoid being out and about on Halloween, lots of eggs and flour flying about then. The worst problems we've had have been from our downstairs neighbours.
Oh, and there was the time when a police car chase ended in our drive-way.

Worked on Lewisham Business Awards a few years ago – had to film all around Lewisham, including Deptford – must admit I was a little apprehensive walking around with a camera on my own at night – especially around The Albany!!

Then, right in the middle there is the Laban Dance thing. The awards were held in there and presented by Ian Stone (great comic)

IIRC He started off the awards something like this:

“Welcome to the Lewisham small business awards. Having recently given up the tarts and the drugs, I don’t have a lot of call for small business in Lewisham anymore, but let’s crack on…”

"Imagine if you had shoved, pushed, slapped, cuffed, punched or kicked the little f*cker, he would be traumatised, "

Or one of his mates would then stab you.As much as it rankles I think best advise is to get the hell out of there.
