Elbow/knee pads why doesn't everyone wear them?

Now I feel this may be a heated subject and I'm not trying to cause unrest by why doesn't everyone wear them? Mine seem comfy, don't notice I'm wearing them. It might just save me from losing my job as being unable to type on a computer, or unable to walk. Is it just because they don't look cool?

well for extreme down hill MTBing... (or is it Xtreem?), my risk assessment deems elbow and knee pads entirely necessary, but just for pootling down the shops....
