I've had a philips wet 'n' dry shaver for about 6 years now, and was going to throw it away because it's very good at plucking out whiskers but no so good at cutting them.

So I thought I'd try sharpening it before buying a new one. I took the blades out, gave them (and the inside of the head) and good scrub with warm soapy water. Then I held the blades down on some 400 grit wet 'n' dry, on a flat surface, in a circular motion I ground it for about 20 seconds. Dried it all off, applied some 3-in-1 oil and reassembled.

It sounds better than it did when new, seems to spin a lot quicker. It seems to shave a bit better now but I haven't tried it on a good 1 day stubble yet. I'm sat here waiting for my beard to grow so I can try it properly.

Worth trying next time you're thinking of chucking one away (or buying replacement heads)

Next time, just cut out the middle-man and apply the wet 'n' dry directly to your face.

Wet shaving with a double edge razor is the way forward (cut throat acceptable if your that way inclined)
Yes, but only if you have the time! I have such a lovely collection of double edge razors including a few vintage, plus some stunning badger brushes, several hard soaps and a hundred weight of blades.... they fell out of daily use, oh, about the time my daughter was born! That's a decade now by the way, which just goes to show that Dads of young children manage a 2 minute face scrape with a Sensor at best. I've managed to get the odd nice / proper shave in, but not regular.
One day they'll get regular use again... one day.... 😁

I don't find it takes much longer to be honest, yes you need two lathers and passes for a decent shave, but that's what 2-3 mins extra?

Happy to rush a shower, but the other two morning S's should not be rushed.

My kids are self sufficient btw, but when they weren't a dab on the nose with a foamy shaving brush kept them at bay. it also has the advantage that none of the females in the house nick your razor to shave their legs as they are shoot scared of cutting their legs off.

Chuck the kids in the bath and by the time you've finished your shave it's time for hair washing and getting them out. They've got a load of bath toys but also like to join in with a foamy brush and a debladed razor.

My house females are obviously harder than yours.

Always been an electric shaver man myself.
I inherited my old mans Phillips way back in the day and just kept with electric.

I've been using a Phillips 3 headed jobby for many years. I take the blades out and give them a thoroughly good clean every couple of weeks which keeps them nice and sharp.
