In this case it is a prime example of diverting fact with fiction..... Apart from the few yards on the school entrance, there is an off road shared use cycle facility all the way fom this kids home to the school!

It is only the last few yards to the School that he is on the road, and one wonders if the Head Teacher is willing to see why this stretch is so dangerous?

Perhaps a risk assessment on the parking standards of the parents and enforcement would be a first step?

When I was nearly 5, and had started primary school, our next door neighbour used to give me a lift home on his Vespa. I'd stand on the footboard, his arms either side of me, keeping me from falling off. This would've been mid 1960s, I guess, trip was about 2 miles.

It has nothing to do with safety. The school doesn't want the responsibility of storing the bike. If when it gets stolen they'll no doubt be pressured into providing storage facilities (which they should anyway). Ban the kid up front on some craparse safety excuse and they're sorted.

They can't ban him from riding to school, only form keeping his bike on school grounds. That's a bit of a political issue so they quickly go on to point out that it's unsafe anyway. Now it's going to be the parent that carries the blame if anything happens to the kid. The school's hoping the potential for an accident will dissuade the parents - doesn't sound like it though.

Well for what it's worth my 9 year old son will be making the commute from school to home today unaccompanied by bike for the first time. I did a dry run yesterday and commuted in to school with him this morning whilst his six year old brother wizzed along on the path on his scooter.

Well I saw several children cycling to school today: to my youngest's child's primary school they were all I think on the pavement (apart from my son who in places was on the road). Then passing a local secondary school on my way home I did see some pavement cycling and some on mass on the road cycling - not necessarily good cycling!!!

I wouldn't of minded having a pavement on which to cycle on today when a lorry over took today crossing the hatch markings in the middle of the road (the ones you shouldn't cross unless you can see its all clear), on a bend meeting a learner coming the other way - thankfully slowly - but its solid rock either side of the road there.

Somewhat different here in NL.

We always take our 4 year old to school by bicycle, as do about 90% of parents, and she'll cycle herself just as soon as she can. There's plenty of parking space for bicycles and the school doesn't require any special protective measures.

Yesterday they had the 5 year olds out on the playground with their bikes giving them some training.

Yes, we have a socialist appetite for services and a capitalist appetite for taxation
