Screw in the low limit screw until it moves then stop. Re connect cable as described above.

so garethgas i've disconnected the cable and the chain dropped on to the smallest chain, i've tightened and reconnectted the cable and now i have 1 gear. the chain will move up the cassette when i push the derailleur in but as soon as i let go the chain drops back to the small cog.......so i've made things a lot worse

Bike shop won't charge much for doing both derailleurs, don't worry.

until what moves ? the chain or the derailluer?

You need to be turning the cranks whilst making these adjustments. Not having a bike stand kind of makes this all very difficult for you.

the derailleur. You're only setting it up as a starting point for now. Once that's done, try changing gear and report back.

I have the bike on a stand , I'm hand cranking and the bike will only change up one cog and that's it

Ah right, I read earlier in the thread that you didn't have a stand.

Anyway, so you have the front derailleur in its lowest gear, the smallest chainring? You have the shifters in lowest gear, both front and back? And you're adjusting the limit screw and manually pulling on the gear cable to see just how far the rear derailleur moves under full tension? You're not just relying on the shifter to see this?

Well front derailleur doesn't change gears now so I'm off to Evans

I've serviced and changed brake pads and callipers on my mg zs.......sort bike gears is beyond me. 30 quid at Evans to sort, least I'll have that bottom hill climbing gear (well worth 30 quid)
