However, some companies don't use a list of email addresses, they just send emails to billions of variations. They then use the unsubscribe as a way of authenticating that the email address is valid, then you'll find yourself on another list and get even more.

A good rule is never to click "unsubscribe" for anything that you don't remember subscribing to in the first place.

NHS Mail caused chaos for our trust recently, plus many others I’m sure. They introduced a new junk filter, to push all of those emails into junk folders.......What they hadn’t accounted for is our Data Warehouse schedules out hundreds of reports, going through a NHS Mail relay, which means they were all now appearing to be spoofing and so went into everyone’s junk folders!! Their next step was going to be to delete all of those same emails......they’ve instead turned off the junk filter, for now!

@I like Skol I've followed this policy for at least two years, probably longer. I unsubscribe anything that arrives which I don't want. I get very little spam and it creates no problems at all.

The introduction of GDPR helped clear all sorts of rubbish.

My wife on the other hand receives 2-300 crap emails per week. She usually then misses important stuff!!!

I find it works for known organisations, until I buy something from them again. In which case, I seem to get added to their marketing database again.

Gmail is quite good at filtering the Viagra type emails into a spam folder. As mentioned upthread these are best not opening or unsubscribing from.

Don't unsubscribe from spam as marks your address as live and therefore makes it more valuable . It's best to mark it as spam and let your filter learn that group

A Minging Manc...
Just unticked the box in the forum preferences that sends an email everytime someone replies to a conversation that involves me. Didn't see the point really as I am online so frequently that I see them anyway.

The constant flood of emails does seem to be slowing, but not before a tidal wave seemed to hit on Mon/Tue. I'm hoping if it carries on like this it will soon just be me on my own in an empty room..... :okay:

Just an update.

Unwanted emails are just a trickle now so it seems to be working well.

Did get this gem this morning though.....

I use Gmail via Thunderbird.... when i look in my spam folder on Gmail, it's packed. The few that do get through automatically end up in my spam folder in Thunderbird... the amount of spam i get in my inbox is minimal, and unsubscribe usually sorts those out.

It's my blog that gets the spam comments but they'll give up in a few months time, I expect.

Careful folks!

This arrived yesterday and is quite good compared to the normal attempts, made me look at it for all of 3 seconds before consigning it to the sin bin.....

Given away by amateur shoddy practices like using rogue sender email address and linking to an unrelated website (the whole email is an image embedded as a link, I included the link in my snip). Of course they didn't use my name either but before I even began to check licence numbers against my actual licence I knew it was a garbage email.
I imagine this one might catch a lot?

All spam is permanently deleted when i delete , works really well, i dont even need to look at the email.

I've been unsubscribing to many marketing emails for several years. If I've never heard of the company I block the address instead.
This works quite well, but one recent purchase generated 3 marketing mails a day, so I unsubscribed even though I intended to buy from them again. They promptly sent me five emails, all different in under an hour telling me they missed me, wanted me back and.... etc. I blocked them and won't buy again.
Similarly on Amazon some smaller sellers will pester for reviews. I always review after 3 attempts from them. Saying,'1 star, would be less as, after buying such and such an item from them, they bombarded me with review requests, avoid!

I do hope your issues is now solved, you really have to be careful to input the correct informations!,
Also re: the TV licensing inability to automatically renew, I’ve received loads of these & deleted the lot, being the rebel that I am, luckily the television is still working & I’ve yet to be rudely interrupted during Corrie or Emmerdale thankfully!
