The Emigration thread started me thinking... how many CCers are the product of immigration to the UK? (I know some of you live abroad, but most on here are UK-based).
Not going back to Anglo-Saxon migration, that would be silly, but let's say up to 2 maybe three generations back.
For my part, my parents both left Ireland in the 1950s (my dad after long-term unemployment, my mum looking to train as a nurse). They met over here, settled down and had sprogs.

Father was born in London, but his family was a combination of Eastern European Jewish, Irish, Lancashire via the USA, and Suffolk. Mother is Highland Scots with a dash of Welsh and going back a bit, French Huguenot. My wife is Japanese, and my son is Japanese, Canadian and British. We are currently in Tokyo, but we live in Canada.

Dad's side: Spanish/Greeks & Greek/Greeks
AND I'm -as already mentioned- born and raised in Athens, currently living in UK.

but why does it matter?
we all came here at some point... some last week, some last year, some two or three generations ago, some with William the Conqueror, some with Romans and some with the Celts and Picts.
it's not silly.
No, it isn't, and of course you are quite right. I'm just interested, that's all. For me, the interest comes from my parents' experience... I was raised in a very 'Irish' house, culturally, but count myself as very English/British in my own cultural development and outlook, while retaining a strong interest in my heritage. At my primary school, 90% (ish) of the kids had immigrant parents (Italian and Irish mostly, with a few others) and the street I grew up in had very few 'English' families on it, so immigration and cultural heritage have always had a strong influence on me, so it's simply an interest that stems from that.

I think I just make it. Might be out by one generation but my fathers side are from Ireland, Cartwrights. There's even some scandal, a bigamist who went to jail for it, was a brother of a great, great, great grandfather. Don't know much about my mothers side, possibly from Wales but much further back.
