Apologies if this in in the wrong area as, on the face of it, it might not be to serious for Cafe. If so please move in mods.

It's an inevitable part of life the people die or have serious, often life changing, injuries and there are often mentioned in Cyclechat posts. E,g, RIP Joe Bloggs etc.

Reading such threads it's not uncommon to see people express what seems to be genuine sorrow. I am alone in feeling total apathy towards such events?

It's not just you.

Whilst I have sympathy for others I'm not emotionally connected to people I don't know so I'm not going to pretend that these threads or social media posts have any effect other than thinking that's a shame for the people involved.

I think the major difference between you and me is the sympathy and shame element. Its not something I consider in such posts.

I find it hard to get emotional about any death. It comes to us all in the end.
I was completely ambivalent about deaths in my close family; mother, father and all my uncles and aunties.
I regret their passing but there is nothing I could do about any of it.
No point dwelling on anything that you have no control over.

Family and friends its hard, especially unexpected. Others, nope. Crap happens, and its life and we all have enough with our own families and friends to deal with.

I've attended the funeral of both my grandfathers at a yound age, somewhere between 7 & 12 years old. In both cases I was a cord bearer for the coffin, and in one case number 1 cord as replacement for my father being injured. Despite sharing a bedroom with one for several years and summer holidays with the other as a child I dont recall any personal emotional, or any shedding of tears, despite what was going on around me. Possibly what led me to asking why the caller was bothering me at work with a call giving news of my fathers death.

It depends. If it's someone I've met, or it affects someone I've met, then yes, it affects me.
Similarly, if it's a situation I've been in, then that'll affect me too.
Other things don't. It all depends...

People have different levels of empathy largely due to their upbringing, and handle different modes of communications at differing levels intimacy.

I haven't voted because your poll doesn't allow my view to be expressed.

I tend to empathise, it is normal for some others not to.

  1. I sometimes mark the passing with a comment if it is someone whose career I've followed, as in the Nicky Hayden thread. But I don't get emotional as I have never met them personally. Like Dirk I did not get very emotional over my parents deaths, I was always aware it was going to happen sooner or later and my mother lived to the grand old age of 91. The only death that hit me hard was learning that my ex wife had been dead for almost a year when I found out by accident.
