I used to be in the same boat with bringing my laptop to and from everyday. Then I just asked for a desktop to be my main work machine and keep the laptop at home for out of hours and bringing with me on the weekends.

The job had no problem with it but then again they know with that setup I can access the network within minutes saving them alot of potential outages.

You just need to present your business case. If you can prove the value they'd be mad not to invest in it.

This was one of the options I suggested and would be my preferred fix. Its just getting a little frustrating waiting on management decisions while still lugging the heavy machine around with me.

Yes, there are alot of shiny macs and Ipads in use by higher management.

I feel your pain. Execs have decided that lowly staff do not deserve iPads.

But guess who they come to when theirs stop working?

"Sorry Mr Exec, I don't have one so I can't really troubleshoot."

Where my wife teaches the 'exec' in charge of IT (who earns way more than a mere teacher) decided all the teachers needed macs. So she has a £1000+ high-spec mac and I, an 'exec' myself, have a lenovo netbook* costing less than half that from my employer.

Chortle..... but on the school macs they run a virtual PC running Windows so they can use the full and current version of Office. Way to go to save money.

Why? You can get Office that runs on OS X for the same price as the Windows version.

office 2008 for mac was a pile of parp.

office 2011; not a complete suite and lobomised in comparison with the windows versions....

apart from that it is great....

as one reviewer said "The truth is, Office for Mac has always felt like second-rate software. Given the resources Microsoft has at its disposal, and the ever-increasing market share of OS X, you might think that Microsoft would want to protect the pre-eminence of its file formats with unbeatable software like Office 2010 for Windows. But, as with previous editions, there's little sign that Mac users are being taken seriously. Most will use Office for Mac 2011 because they have little choice, and it's hard to escape the conclusion that Redmond simply doesn't care."

After years of Windows/Office I switched to Mac and Office 2011. Maybe I'm an unsophisticated user but its worked fine for me and I'm sure would work fine enough for a school.

If you had somehow tied the remote access to the OOH work, then your management might have come up with a solution, not this it helps now. Are you paid to transport work equipment about, has a risk assessment been carried out for this? It's difficult to know what to do without knowing your work situation, do you have a union rep?

A course of action which will bring great credit to risk assessments, H&S in particular, and trade unionists in general.

(Unite member here btw)
