Proper shorts them, I've got a few pairs of running shorts like that.

And if anyone mentions budgy smugglers I usually reply something like, 'Kevin Keegan was European footballer of the year wearing shorts like this, and Coe and Ovett won Olympic gold, so if they're good enough for them.'

I haven't worn a tie to work for at least 30 years now, possibly longer. When I first started (1981), it was always a jacket and tie, but didn't need to be a suit. The jacket actually usually spent most of the day over the back of my chair. Put on only when I needed to leave my desk to talk to somebody.
Same here. In the early eighties one guy got sent home to change when he came in wearing smart shorts. However one of the female engineers used to wear jeans a lot and nothing was ever said. Might have had something to do with her backside looking like two boiled eggs in a handkerchief.

It is shoes that always confuse me with shorts and offices

clearly you don;t want people wearing the same shoes and socks
but do you wear shoes with those short socks that don;t come over the side of the shoe
or no socks and make the shoes sweaty?

or should you wear sandals

they just don;t make smart shoes for men to wear when their legs are visible in the same way as they do for women

Decent pair of brogues works for me. Oxfords would be a bit too formal I think
