In many countries it's The Norm:

Not exactly sure about the point in replacing loose trousers over your legs with sock that end up a few inches above your shoes

with short then only a couple of inches gap before starting ticker socks that almost reach you knees

I thought the idea of wearing shorts was to provide more air circulation over bare skin of your legs to cool you down

not sure that will work with long shorts and long socks!!

I don't where you're shopping but shorts, like long pants, come in all sorts of lengths from mid calf to early 80s 'short'.

You can get short of different length

but it is range dependant in places like Next or M&S

so if I go there and think "Oh - that's nice" then I can only have that design, colour etc in that length

there will be others that are shorter or longer - but not long medium and short as in trousers
I generally find that Next are too long
M&S seem to have reduced the length of theirs over the last year or so

"sports" type short can tend to be shorter generally - smarter ones tend to be longer

places with a greater range of shops that Widnes (i.e. any large town or city!) may have a better range!!!

School uniform seems to be a very British phenomenon in Western Europe, most other countries seem to manage without it. I’m not convinced, it’s expensive and poorer families struggle to afford it, especially when there is a very closely controlled cartel of suppliers.

And yet one of the strongest arguments in favour of school uniforms has always been that they are a leveller. If all pupils have to wear the same thing, then (in theory), yiou can't tell from looking at them how well off or otherwise their families are.

Our office has a very loose dress code, and shorts are not at all uncommon at this time of year, with most people wearing T shirts or polo shirts.

I actually prefer to wear a collared shirt and "proper" trousers in the office, just to give myself a clear distinction between "office" clothes and "home" clothes.

But I haven't worn a tie to work for at least 30 years now, possibly longer. When I first started (1981), it was always a jacket and tie, but didn't need to be a suit. The jacket actually usually spent most of the day over the back of my chair. Put on only when I needed to leave my desk to talk to somebody.

You can tell straight away even if they’re dressed the same

Generally, everyone wore a collar and tie, long trousers, and leather shoes, but I wore the same without the tie. I don't like them, they feel claustrophobic. One guy had the tie, but wore training shoes.

The boss once asked us if we'd like white lab coats if he got us some, but nobody was interested much, so he didn't bother.

This.

Once you've picked the type of shorts you want (I like khaki walking shorts), you don't get a choice, you just have to take whatever the current fashion is. I particularly like zip-off trousers that serve as longs and shorts, and whilst they come in S-M-L, the length of the shorts has been getting a larger percentage of the overall length.

Clothes sizes aren't even consistent, I've got two pairs of Craghoppers walking trousers that have identical waist sizes, but one's a 34" waist and the other's a 36". There's just no need for that sort of cr@p, any idiot can use a tape measure properly, it's not difficult.

Dark clothing in summer seems to be the fashion at the moment, I don't know which bright spark thought that was a good idea.

On the left a pair of shorts I regard as a sensible length. They're about 30 years old, and absolutely threadbare because I haven't been able to find anything to match them. The shorts in the middle were the nearest I could find about 5 years ago, and the ones on the right are the tops off the zip-off trousers I've just bought. Lengths from top to bottom are 44cm, 51cm & 54cm.

Whilst we're about it, the Lycras on the left here are the only ones I've ever had that I regard as long enough, and the ones on the right are a pair that are the same length as every other pair I've had:

The satisfactory shorts on the left are about the same length in both pictures.

Not sure what's more horrifying... the shorts or that 70s brown carpet
