Schools have finished exams locally, so lots of minor roads have 16 year olds wobbling their way along them on foot at the moment.

Got a few shrieks (prob my knees, tbh, they're a bit of a state) and the one lad with a bike offering me a race. Slowed down, gave them space, smiled and waved.

Did a search for Winter Hill, I'm not much of a thread starter

Can I just confirm that Winter Hill is not rideable on a road bike? Just looking for somewhere new to ride to (and up) from here in Wirral.

If you ever get to South Cheshire/North Shropshire there's a nasty little climb up to Wirswall near Whitchurch - well worth a visit and no-one around to see to you struggling!

If you want encouragement, you need to cycle in France. If they shout "chapeau" or "allez" they actually mean it sincerely.

I think I must've been fairly near that when I rode to Audlem week before last

If you lived on the Wirral you would understand, I live near the top left hand corner of the Wirral peninsula and so all my rides start out roughly SE and end roughly NW which gets on my tits sometimes
So you live around West Kirby/Hoylake? I was born and brought up in Prescot, Lancs (Never did get used to calling it Prescot, Merseyside!) and spent over 30 years living in Widnes. I spent a lot of my summers in New Brighton so I am familiar with the area. On club runs, our elevenses when we were in that area was either the Mills or Dunkirk and if any cafe deserved to be called a 'greasy spoon' it was Dunkirk!
If your run home sometimes gets on your tits then spare a thought for my run home when I lived in Widnes; from RAF Sealand, up to the lights and bear right and that long straight past Stanlow and it seemed to be a headwind, rain or both! Then onto Frodsham and that hill out of it at the Bear's Paw lights - always had a mental block on that hill - and onto Runcorn Hill and the bridge.

Ah yes, you're talking about Oil Sites road, it's the route I use to get to Delamere, arrow straight and a nightmare with a headwind!

One advantage I have is that virtually all my rides come past the Mills (Eureka) on the home leg

I don't mind - I figure that if I smile back its giving a positive cycle interaction. Some gentleman commended me on getting up a hill the other day - either I must have looked as if I wasn't going to make it or they don't see many cycle up that hill. I was trying it for a change to see whether it was easier than the normal one I would take.
