I'll be honest and would rather blend in and not be made anything for everybody to look at; just respected...

had some today, was travelling about 25mph past a bus stop couple of youths start yelping "TOUR DE FRANCE TOUR DE FRANCE" whilst clapping....

My fave 'hill' which i cannot ascend nowadays (winter hill) as its out of bounds for some inane reason.

I always had a hard time with sheep as - when your in the zone ascending this bugger of a climb their is nothing worse than a sheep....

Did a search for Winter Hill, I'm not much of a thread starter

Can I just confirm that Winter Hill is not rideable on a road bike? Just looking for somewhere new to ride to (and up) from here in Wirral.

If I am injured I HATE the patronising "well done you are doing really well" comments....which you always have to respond with "this is the worst I have ever done....I am just injured"

Easy, you blank it, keep focused and looking forward.
On the TTs, there is sometiems someone that will stand there clapping and shouting, "come on" but you cant respond to it.
Just use the encouragement and dont say anything. Keep looking forward. Dont even smile.

I disagree.... it is always nice for the person watching to feel their encouragement has done it's job. This is why I always say thank you or smile even if it kills me

I would rather encouragement than chavs showing off in front of their mates.

This evening I had one of a group intentionally step (well, "strut") out into the road right in front of me on my way home, then sarcastically and aggressively say "watch it" as if I was in the wrong.


Cant say I've ever had the encouragement some of you lot have. I must be going too fast to hear it. (I would smile and nod if I did)

I think It has something to do with your shiny road bikes

Okay here ya go: Winter Hill on a road bike would be a pleasant little excursion but it's a dead end so you'd need to go over on a mountain bike and ride off the steep end. Then it gets interesting - very interesting.

That radio mast is, apparently, 1000 feet above sea level at its top. When I feel like boggling my mind I remind myself that Everest is 29 times higher!

Have you tried:-
The Three Beacons - Billinge, Ashurst & Parbold.
Long & hilly - Snake Pass, Winnat's and the Cat & Fiddle - about 150mile round trip from the Wirral
Old Horseshoe and new Horseshoe Passes
Moel Famau and the Edge of the World - on an MTB, can be done on a tourer with care!

The FNRttC receives all kinds of encouragement from the roadside. Must be the time of night. All I can tell you is that if young women ask you if you're riding for charity, the correct answer is 'yes'.

Cheers, I looked at the road up it on Satellite imagery and it looked smoothish but it's not always possible to see the surface that clearly. I don't mind about the dead end, it's just a destination.

I'm a regular around the Horseshoe (old and new), in fact I'm riding up the Horseshoe tomorrow morning. I might break my daily mileage record one day by taking in the Peak District, so far 130 hilly miles is my furthest!

I'm not looking to break any records anyway, just trying to think laterally to open up new locations for me to ride to. If you lived on the Wirral you would understand, I live near the top left hand corner of the Wirral peninsula and so all my rides start out roughly SE and end roughly NW which gets on my tits sometimes

When I used to live in Lincoln I could head out from home on any point of the compass and makes for more varied riding.

Having said all that, Wirral is still great for cycling.
