Endomondo challenges - where are they going?

There's been a bit of understandable dissatisfaction with lots of new people joining the challenge who aren't CC members.
It's not really in the spirit of the thing, it's a bit of harmless fun and a good way to log miles against people you "know" online.
I did have an idea to close it to invite only, and compile a list of CC members who wanted to carry on with it but Sam has made some very good comments that the challenge may help to promote the forum as it grows and pointed to the "rotten egg" challenge which got big enough to attract sponsorship from Endomondo themselves.

What are peoples thoughts on it? I can't see any merit in having two challenges, one for active CC members, one for less active ones and anyway, how would you decide who qualifies for which?
There have been two challenges (one open, one closed) for a little while now, just to give people a chance to be on the front page (there's only one page of members ^_^) But, to be perfectly honest, it's kind of a little pointless as in the larger challenge, you soon learn who does a similar mileage to yourself and you can pit yourself against them (that's how I did it anyway)

What are the users thoughts on it? personally I don't want any nastiness, it looks bad on CC and it's only a bit of fun.
Where do we want it to go?

I think as long as we know it is open to the entirety of the Endomondo community then fine, particularly if CC is promoted by it. We could still run the private challenge in tandem. For me it was just that there seemed to be some goading going on over the last 24 hours (followed by an influx of non CC members) which as you mention is not in the spirit of the forum that hacked me off.
I would say without being drawn into it too much that the title of the challenge does state at present it is a "Monthly unofficial mileage challenge for members of the CycleChat cycling forum." so this would need to be changed

Its a shame post counts don't still show up against each members name here as then you could have had a qualifying number to gain access a bit like you have to have to sell things on here.

Duh ok scrub that, just noticed in each profile it is now showing  How about 100 posts and you can join ?

I un-joined not a flounce just do not want to be involved in the sort of thing that went on, or get involved in petty silly online conversations like I did!

I think I might shelve Endomondo and carry on with Strava for my fun and my competitive side and Garmin for stats.

At least with Strava there is no interaction with people it just like for like competition and it is mostly based on fact, and when its not you can easily tell.

I also think Strava is going to keep on developing and Endomondo has stagnated. Garmin is what it is but is great for data mining by date etc.

If the overall stats on Strava were as accesible on Strava as Endomondo then I would be tempted to solely use Strav. I use a gps phone though rather than a Garmin so don't have that resource the Garmin gives you. My one concern is that I remember the mess when Cyclogs died it's death and people losing their data. It makes you more comfortable with a back up.

That's a real shame and exactly the sort of thing I think we should try and avoid with the challenge, if anyone feels uncomfortable with the comments it just isn't right. Hopefully you'll reconsider LOCO.

Personally, I'm not in it for the challenge, I just love the way Endo logs all the stats automatically and as I said elsewhere, you soon see who's on a similar mileage to you and can see how you fare against them for a bit of added motivation.

What's the consensus on 4F's 100 posts idea, and run the challenges in tandem, one open one and another closed just for the wafflers active contributors on here? worth a go?

I don't know what we should do. What I do know is that I was enjoying the challenges, but now I am just disheartened. If I wanted to compete with Ferdinand, I would have joined one of the many global challenges he is dominating. I guess I liked the cycle chat challenges because they challenged me, and (in the cold months) I was a contender. Now, if I work very hard, I may get off the third page <sigh>

Other sad fact. I commented on the challenge that our previous champion cyclist and definite forum member, trio25 has been brought low with a broken collar bone. That was obscured entirely by the newcomers dick-size competition.

Trio, if you are out there: get well soon and I look forward to being roundly defeated by you once you are back on your feet.

For me its no fun anymore. I dont do hundreds of miles each month but was happy to check it out and see if I had climbed the ladder. The way its going you'd be as well joining a global challenge.

I'll probably just use Strava on its own now at least I can measure myself on the segments.

Was fun while it lasted and thanks for running it.

The challenges are a bit pointless when the same mega-mile folks are in every one. That said, it's just a bit of fun - I now know who I do similar miles to so I just keep an eye on them for a little extra motivation

Thanks all, we'll go for two then. If anyone wants to send me their Endo names (or add them below,) I'll add you to my friends list then you'll be invited to the next CC challenge which will be closed to random joiners. The other one can run alongside and hopefully help promote the forum.

Of course, anyone can set these up, it's just that I've done the last few.

Entry to the CC challenge will be for members with 100 posts or more (as per 4F,) or who've been a member for some time and have contributed in that time

Hi folks, seems like I missed all the fun. As jefmcg says I've broken my collarbone so haven't been riding, well I assume turbo miles don't count? (I don't log them anyway). Got told on friday its at least another 4 weeks so it's going to be at least August before I try and move up the leaderboard.

I have to say my main reason for using endomondo is the live tracking so hadn't been putting all my rides from my garmin on recently. I had been trying Strava but it doesn't motivate me as I am a rubbish climber!

Have it set to cycling only too, not just any sport. this is a Cycle Chat group on Endomondo, not a running, walking to the shops, swimming, and any other activity that you can set Endomondo running to.

I found it quite a release unjoining all the challenges. I could see what the motivation to join was and didn't really like it.

When Trio burst on to the CC challenge I genuinely had no problem with it and was impressed with her miles, but for me they looked like sensible miles, and clearly Trio is a CC'er.
