I've been going down to see my Mum every couple of days since Christmas, she's had a few medical problems and since the snow has been unable to get her car out and it's been too dangerous anyway for her to attempt to drive down her road which is a side road.

When I went the other day, I could see she was really fed up not being able to do her shopping and go out even though I've been bringing her things and like everyone of that age, is prepared for a siege.

Today I decided to take a spade down and clear the bit of pavement that she uses to get out of her drive. When I walked up, I heard someone shovelling. It was my mother, wielding a lawn edger trying to get rid of snow! There was no way she would have gone in so I just got on with my spade and it took about 1.5 hours to clear it as the ice was hard packed underneath. We had a bit of lunch and as I went, she toddled off to Sainsburys.

I hope I have half her energy at that age!;)

My mum is 80 and she's a retired physio, so she takes great pride in keeping fit. She's not happy if she hasn't been out for a walk every day and a local Ramblers' walk at the weekend. She goes to the gym and puts some of the younger women to shame, she sings in three choirs and is a local cathedral guide, so whenever you ring her she's out. Now she's depressed and angry because she's got a touch of angina - never been seriously ill in her life and doesn't want to become a burden on the NHS.

Oh - and she's also a proud member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
