I kept on cycling through the first 10 days of a cold, and even after I stopepd it really knocked me for six. It was only after another two weeks that I began to feel like I had energy again, and started cycling.

I was wondering if keeping cycling had made it that much worse. Interesting to think it might have.

Cheers

Hmmmmmmmmm I tend to cycle when unwell but I did it in Feb 2003 and ended up having to go sick for a week as I wasn't recovering.Chest infection.

Can see why it isn't a good idea.

I also used to try and cycle through a cold then a couple of years back I was really knocked for six and ended up in hospital for 11 days. Recently I had a heavy cold and stayed off the bike for nearly three weeks and after a couple of days was back to normal fitness. IMO moral of the story is when having a cold take a rest from excercise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you eating enough and getting enough rest? I'm lucky that I don't have a weight problem, but I find that I don't eat enough during the week (too busy, not enough time). As the week goes on, I get progressively more tired. Consequently I pig out at weekends, get plenty of rest and I'm ready for Monday.

Don't take any vitamins, supplements etc. Just eat a good balanced diet.

diet is good, low carbs if i can apart from oats in the morning. fuit in the day, home made chcick sarnies for lunch, and anything from fish or pasta in the evening. no crisps or general junk food i guess. got an average to slim/tonned body i guess you can call it. 6ft2, 13.5stone, 32waste. so kinda average i guess. Had pasta last night. getting enough sleep, over 8hrs. not clubbing as much either, not even once a month now ;) matybe just the remains of the cold.

so there is mixed views on vitemens etc?

This is another reason why I figure a plug-on electrical assist module would be a neat idea. If you're feeling a bit rough you could just pop it on, come into work as usual except that you could take it easy at the same time. I could have done with one this morning ;)

I don't bother with energy drinks/bars on the commute but do take a high strength multi-vitamin daily, as well as a vit C supplement and cod liver oils. I also have protein shakes on weight training days.

Like you I train most days as well as 18 miles a day commuting and personally I find that when taking them I am less susceptable to colds.

Although one nutritionist I know thinks that all they do is make you piss more expensive!

If your training daily as well as cycling then your diet maybe worth looking into - I pretty much eat whatever I want all day every day and still only weigh 11 stone.

If you look at almost any athlete they will be using supplements

I'm with your nutritionist - they not only make expensive coloured wee-wee, but they're a cancer risk as well.

But i have also spoken to others who feel they are important for anybody training hard as the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks...

I my own experience since I started taking them I have carried on the same level of training with fewer colds. I wouldn't continue to take them if i cut my training down though.

In terms of a cancer risk - there's not much left in the world that isn't!

Mine's back in action, and I tried that this morning My journey to work is normally fairly hard going for me, but this morning using the bike to full effect I barely broke a sweat.

I'm planning simply to use it one day or week or so towards the end of the week, when I'm more likely to take the car.
