I made a 'ring of paper' on which the outer & inner had the question & a message, this is what I proposed with.

After boxing day had passed we went sales shopping for a diamond ring & the OH chose, I had a deposit ready.

Awww, how lovely my fiance cooked a lovely steak dinner (he's a chef) and halfway through dessert he started talking about marriage etc and i didn't click on until went down on one knee and i screamed and kind of launched myself at him haha

It (being "engaged") did once have a status in common law (and seems to still have one in some places). It was "breach of promise" in a broken engagement that ruined Miss Haversham's life. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breach_of_promise
