I do like the idea of alternating starters (or, more accurately, choosers) after one coin-toss for Test #1.

I think that would take pitch preparation by the home side to a level even higher than it is now - at least at present you cant be certain until immediately before play commences that you are going to get first use of the pitch as a batting or bowling side

Good point.

I'd though about this. In a series like this one I don't think there would be enough time to mess about with the pitch preparation dramatically after the toss for the first test. Having said that, I've never prepared a test cricket pitch so I may be talking nonsense

The random toss in India strongly influences the result. Got a better idea to mitigate the effect of chance on the result?

I dont know either - but probably a week would be enough - let the grass grow a bit - take a bit more grass off - let it dry more - or wet it up more - roll it to death or just leave it alone - im sure there are other variations of thing that can be done particularly if you have longer than a week

Seems my idea is a bit of a nonstarter. I do like your idea of the voluntary follow on for the side batting second. Thus the toss winner may get 1st & 4th bat or 2nd & 3rd (or 1st and 3rd but pretty unlikely). May be a tough decision and would certainly mitigate the effect of chance on the decision

My prediction in this test is that India will get 500, England will not get 300 and will be forced to follow on on a raging Bunsen burner. Probably the same would have happened in reverse had England won the toss

Although a score not to be sneezed at (455) England did well to take the last five wickets for 96 runs after India were 351-5 at one stage.

Cook has fallen cheaply (having had is off stump broken in two) so now it's a time to dig in and grind it out: no time for flamboyance at this stage. As I mentioned earlier, I'm not sure if dropping Woakes for Anderson was a wise move as Woakes is a very handy lower middle-order batsmen.

England currently 32-1.

and would almost certainly lead to even more draws
But if victories and losses are necessary there might be more pressure to prepare result friendly (bowler friendly) pitches. Without having really thought about it, a regular ABBA batting order strikes me as an interesting proposition, although it could lead to lower attendance when the B team is the touring team.

I tend to agree - I think Woakes has earned the right to be in the team - certainly good enough - however Anderson for me was the pick of the England seamers - worth 60 to 70 runs?

Maybe Broad should have been the one to make way for Anderson, seeing as Broad has lost his batting confidence completely since that knock on the helmet, against India, too

- although I doubt if Cook or Bayliss would have relished telling Broad the news.
