Joe Root is a class act in any form of the game. Let's hope they don't burden him with the captaincy anytime soon.

A stunning match. Great to see England go for it from the off and not let up. In fact, if there's a lesson to be learned there (for England) it's that they can play that style of game, and not the slow steady accumulation of opener runs and give it loads with wickets in hand in the last 20 overseas.

The 50 over game has changed methinks. It's the 20 over games big brother now, not test crickets son. Teams are thinking differently now (400 is the new 300) and England have been slow to adapt. Let's see what the next game brings.

100% agree. Frankly the ODI format was dying and I expected it to just disappear and we'd be left with tests and T20. ODI's were sort of the test's little brother. Now they're T20's big brother and it makes for great entertainment. Nobody wants to see a side score 250 in 50 overs, it's boring.

Anyone remember this epic performance from England? And they won the toss and fielded. Quelle surprise.

Both England's openers got runs, but they batted SOOO slooowly. And it was 60 overs in those days - even worse!

The West Indies score also shows just how the ODI game has changed out of all recognition. Greenidge, Haynes, Richards, Lloyd, King....and they got 4.76 per over.....and thrashed England. International sides would look at that run rate these days and laugh. Fielding restrictions have helped juice it up a bit of course but it's the mindset that's the big change.

It is Friday – It is the Oval – New Zealand win the toss and choose to bat (Surprise Surprise)

Question is which England team will turn up – and for that matter which Kiwi team – Speculation is rife that a combination of match fixing and doping was responsible for the result in the first ODI – did the ECB bung the Kiwis to promote ticket sales in the remaining four matches – What were the English batsmen on?

228-2 off 33. Got to be looking at.....what? I'd guess 370

We'll see just how bright this brave new dawn of England ODIs really is

England have proved they can make 400+ – whether or not they can do it chasing a big total today is the question in doubt - It has become a matter of stats – If the batsmen play in an aggressive manner sometimes they will be lucky – sometimes they will be unlucky and sometimes they will make their own luck – to overhaul the Kiwis in this match three or four batsmen at a minimum will have to bat well and be lucky - how lucky/successful they are will be measured individually by how many runs they get in the match - Wisden will not record how lucky or unlucky they were.

Of course the Kiwis may take luck out of the equation by bowling diabolically well

As to how bright the new dawn is the proof of the pudding will be the scores on the doors at the end of the series (if that is not mixing my metaphors too much) ^_^

You've got to like how the kiwis play.

Well, OK, you've not got to but it'd be kind of begrudging not to!

Fingers crossed that England rise to the challenge. Rip, sh*t or bust as we might say in NZ.
