What is the gist of the article... though to be fair I think one of those photos is no-longer as depicted:biggrin:

my translation:

The Netherlands are recognised as an outstanding 'cycle-land'. Nowhere else in Europe and perhaps in the world is one so varied and so generally well looked after regarding (cycle path something) as we are. There are many lands which could learn from us. Great Britain, for example. There is a book which has been published with the most curious or dangerous cycle paths. Here is a small sample:

AMSTERDAM - Nederland staat bekend als een fietsland bij uitstek. Nergens in Europa en misschien wel ter wereld is een zo uitgebreid en over het algemeen goed verzorgd fietspadennet te vinden als bij ons. Daar kunnen ze in veel landen nog wat van leren. In Groot-Brittannië bijvoorbeeld. Daar is een boek uitgekomen met de meest curieuze of gevaarlijke fietspaden. Ziehier een klein overzicht:

A Dutch news site ran this picture overview of the more interesting cyle lanes in the UK. Fun slideshow if you need some cheering up:

Very funny - ;):laugh::rolleyes:.

The sad thing is though, its our money(tax payers) thats been wasted. They had an opportunity to do it properly and couldn't be bothered(the councils) getting off their ar$es and having a look at the areas to be painted. I bet they got the money for the cycle lanes - drew where they wanted them on an old map, then handed them to a contractor(who only did as he was told).
I know this seems like a rant - but the small towns around my area(Falkirk) have just won a share of £4m to do cycle lanes. They'll probably be like those. I will be laughing honest - I'll even take photos - I just hate waste. :biggrin:

Nah, it's got to be put into context. How many thousands of miles of cycleroutes are there....and they can find 19 bad examples. Unbelieveably stupid ones, yes....but extreme and rare i should think. You could probably find the same in any European country.
Or maybe we're lucky in Peterborough...i'm full of praise for 99% of the stuff we've got here. As always, there could be more or a bit better, but generally they're very good.

Not so rare, sadly. The UK is bumping along the bottom of the Euro league when it comes to quality of new cycle facilities. :thumbsup::sad:

The sad thing is I'm not even particularly surprised when I come across a cycle lane like that. Even worse are the lanes which suddenly direct you to merge with road traffic, often at pinch points.

I think someone just discovered Warrington cycle campaign's site:laugh:.

Thanks for pointing that out - I've found that site as well now. Great website, and the Campaign looks like an excellent initiative. And even more pics to make you laugh or cry, depending on how close you live to such horrors of road layout.

Does anyone know wether the designers of these monstrosities ever get the sack for inflicting them upon us?
