There is a potential sabbatical on the horizon, which will giving me both unpressurised timescale to do it, as well as when to do it.

But the choice is immense.

Scandinavia
Japan
Italy/Portugal
The Eurovelo routes

The South Island roads are very quiet after the January holidays. And a fabulous touring destination.

you could always start at the top of Argentina - plenty of cycling still to be done and lots of fine scenery no doubt

How long and what time of year? Vancouver to LA is gorgeous. Relentlessly undulating so get fit beforehand or be prepared to take your time over it. If you have time, start from Calgary and tag on the Icefields Parkway
