My friend did the same. Stood at the checkout for several minutes whilst cashier had chat with mate. Eventually cashier turned to my friend and said "Can I help you sir?" "Yes", he said, "you can put these back on the shelves" and walked out. I've been waiting for a chance to do the same, but at our local Co-op the staff seem pretty much on the ball.
Whilst I understand the sentiment of wanting to show how irritated you are by their lack of service, I can't help feeling that this type of gesture is pointless as it's most likely not the cashier who will have to put the items back but some other poor bugger who may be very helpful at what they do.

I disagree.  One way or another word will reach Them that This is not acceptable. Otherwise what's to make anything change?

My point is that you are peeved with the cashier for talking to someone whilst supposedly serving you (or not) - fine, I get that... but leaving your stuff there for them to put back on the shelf only leaves you without your shopping, and someone else (usually not the cashier in question) putting your stuff back so you haven't got any kind of "payback" on them.

On the other hand, waiting to finally get served and then putting in a complaint about the cashier whilst leaving the store might be a useful alternative - CCTV could be checked to see how much they were talking/delaying things and what kind of attitude they were displaying (body language will speak volumes) and assuming the Management care about this sort of thing something could be done. If not then simply choose to shop elsewhere and they will have to take some form of action if enough people do it.

I went into full Victor Meldrew mode in TK Maxx the other day, a queue of people at the only checkout that was open and three staff milling about doing the best part of bugger all. I don't believe it!

And relax...
