Ernest L Hampshire?

Anybody heard of him?

Yesterday, we were in the RSPA charity shop in Ramsgate and spotted a very nice print in a solid wooden frame. At the foot, it had a small brass plate inscribed "A Surrey Garden - Ernest L Hampshire 1907-1938".

It's under glass, so I presume it's a print.

We were intrigued but also liked the picture, so we bought it. A snip at £8.75.

Researched when we got home and is seems that a Ernest Llewelyn Hampshire was a prominent painter and several of his works have been auctioned. But am curious to know what the 1907-1938 means. It's not his life span, so what is it?

The time it took him to paint it?
Or the time he lived with that garden?

With a label like that I wouldn't assume that. It looks like an expensive, possibly exhibition label rather than something you'd attach to a repro.

If you do end up selling it for thousands, don't forget the RSPCA's share.

Believe it or not i have just bought the Original Painting by Ernest Llewellyn Hampshire only yesterday on a buy ,sell and swap site in Bulgaria for 18 leva or about £7/£8 Pounds, its in a Gilt Frame as you can see from the Photographs and has been cleaned at some point and put in a new Frame

, it is the Original Painting by him and i assume it was bought to Bulgaria by someone English coming to live here .

Ernest Hampshire was a landscape painter in oil and watercolour, etcher and architect. He was born at East Dulwich on 16th June 1882. He studied at Clapham School of Art, Heatherley's, the Central School of Arts and Crafts, and in Cornwall under J. Noble Barlow. He exhibited between 1907 and 1938 at the RA, R.I., R.O.I., in the provinces and at the Paris Salon and also at the Walker Art Gallery.

Reference: Grant M. Waters. The Dictionary of British Artists Working 1900-1950. He died in 1944.
