I thought that hi viz was compulsory in poor visibility and from dusk onwards. Good visibility during daylight and you can leave it packed in your panniers.

ditto Italy - and they require you to wear it in tunnels as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a similar requirement in Spain but I couldn't swear to that.

So if this a European Law then we in the UK who are also part of Europe are subject to it unless our Government has chosen not to comply. There will be a deadline by which they have to.

I don't know that anyone claimed it was an EU-wide law, more like hearsay about rules applied in particular countries. Anyway, if it were the case, I would have broken the law in several of them a couple of years back and never had any trouble.

More hearsay, but I've heard the French have got quite strict on fines (across the board) in an attempt to raise revenue!

We expect people to adhere to our laws when coming here so 'when in Rome' etc. What's the big deal about carrying a little vest anyway - they weigh nothing and fold up tiny? We carried them in Spain last year in case of bad weather/tunnels etc and wasn't a bother

I think that a lot of french laws regarding high viz equipment carried in cars, which used to just be a red triangle and spare bulb kit but now includes a high viz jacket for each driver (not to mention 2 breathalisers) is a reaction to the fact that they don't use catseyes in the road. I've been driving in the dark, with driving rain in France and its terrifying if you dont know the roads.

They also have strict laws regarding bikes on rear car carriers, they must not obscure the rear lights, indicators or number plates. The police will stop you and make you remove your bikes if caught, and if they dont fit in your car....hard luck! I hope the family in the new eurotunnel advert dont get stopped.

I don't know about the two breathalisers, but the rest actually comes from a European Union Directive.

How old is the directive? Directives compel national Law to be altered to meet certain aims within a time period. (Potentially several years) So there may yet be no reason for the UK to have adopted this a law like this.
