I love the Evans in Manchester

Got Oakley jawbone price matched down by almost. 50quid

Then I turn up mid ride with a non shifting front mech due to a fraied cable.it was replaced and indexed there and then.total cost was 11quid

However the one in the trafford center is shockingly bad and I'll not step foot in there

Ehhhh?!? Did you have a bad day sweetypea .............?

You writ,

Mate took his Specialized hybrid into Evans 'cos the back brake was rubbing on the back wheel. They said they'd take a look. Next thing he knows, they're giving him a quote of £530 to sort the bike, and suggesting that he'd probably be best off buying a new one.

Ok, it's tired. It needs a new chainset, chain & cassette. The back wheel needs a broken spoke replacing, and five minutes trueing. It needs new brake blocks, and new tyres wouldn't hurt, though the ones it has will be good for another thousand or two miles. I'm fixing it up for him with ebay bits: £50 + a couple of hours. £530? Me arse, as my old gran used to say.

I was correct - it's an old jallopy fit for the scrap heap. Not worth a bike shop spending time on it. As I stated it is only worth if the owner or a friend, ie you, will do it for nowt or for free or for a drink.

No, ********, I had a fine day thanks.

Wrong on every count. Evans were trying to tell my mate that his perfectly good bike wasn't worth fixing and he should buy a new one. He is not 'one of the' etcs, nor is he a cheapskate. Oh, and it's not a jallopy, it's a very nice Specialized, that just needs an hour and £50 spent on it. Have a nice day, why don't you.

Complain to head office about it and let them know you got it back to working order with £50.

It may not make a difference, but it is better than doing nothing about it.

I keep reading about this mythical friendly LBS for a road bike Anybody know one in Hammersmith, Ealing, or Battersea, (ish) ?

Thank-you and sorry for being a bit off-topic.

They have to get the bike back to a far higher level than you will for your £50, if they did not then should something go wrong they would be liable, and so could you if you charged your mate any money.

£530 for a bike shop to replace all those things doesn't seem too bad a value. I'd agree with Evans that he'd be better off buying a new bike, than paying them to replace half the bike.

Of course if he only wanted the back brake fixing then perhaps he should have just asked them to fix the broken spoke which would have done the trick, I don't know what they charge, but £20-30?

I'm glad your friend isn't a cheapskate, presumably he'll reward you handsomely for the "couple" of hours you spend fixing his bike. Don't forget to keep a tally though, including the time you spend trawling ebay and the actual time you spend, as you haven't any overheads I reckon £10 per hour rather than the £25 or so Evans have to charge. Don't forget to tell the tax man, and let us know how long it actual takes and costs.

It's called turning away work because they don't want the repair work, which in their eyes would represent low margin.

Happens every day in business.

They aren't turning it away though are they.

They are pricing it to make a profit.

Sweetpea99 is a competitor undercutting them, without their overheads, probably not paying tax or business rates.

Ive been at that point many a time, the cost of repairing the bike just aint worth it unless you have some classic bike frame. Though for a mid range bike its more practical just buying new

Replacement:

Chain + block + chain rings £70
New cables £30
BB £15
Brake blocks £15
Rim replacement or even wheels £150
Tyres £40
Bar tape £10
Labour £100
Total £430

New bike:
£400 - £600

There.. That sounds more like it.

How much does it cost to Oldham?
It can be difficult to talk people who aren't completely in the know into paying what many others see as a 'fair' price for working on a bike- after all it's only a bike innit? This is the main reason GBH in manchester went bust- customers just couldn't handle the labour and overhead.
