Someone please educate me... I thought anybody who rode a road bike was a roadie? Or is it more subtle than that?

The default was that everyone was a "Bike Rider" and rode the road. This even applied to "Trackies" who put a brake on their track iron and joined in. The term "Cyclist" was really applied to commuters and the district nurse, although the Media applied the term to everyone who rode a bike, even the TdF peloton.

When MTBs made an appearance, the term "Off roader" was used to describe the riders.

Confused? I am!

I was once called a roadie by a group of kids on MTB's in a Northamptonshire village as I went by fully loaded on my Galaxy.

Not that I know of. I've been called Tw*t many times, mostly by people wearing baseball caps.
