I used to work in a model (hobby type, not Jordan ) shop and would always give 100% genuine advice. Mainly because Im a genuine kinda guy, but also because I had a reputation as a racer at the local club and the new members were almost always customers I had dealt with. They got into racing because they choose the right model, at the right price, that they could compete with the "big boys" with.

What really infuriates me is when an assistant in a shop is selling a customer the totally wrong thing. For example, we stocked some cars which were £250 and an alternative manufacturer had the SAME car just with a different logo for twice the price - quite often I'd hear an assistant in other shops say that the more expensive one is better because of x, y, z . Like most here, in this type of situation I often have a chat with the customer and give them the facts.

I once talked someone in the local Halfords into one of the Boardman hybrids - shop people were less than helpful, to say the least.

It's a shame, because the Boardmans & Carreras are good bikes, deserving of better.

I've butted in, both to recommend or endorse products (in an LBS) or to contradict the assistant (in a Cycle Surgery). I've also followed people out of a Cycle Surgery and sent to them to the very good LBS around the corner. In my experience, Evans and Cycle Surgery are terrible for arrogant, ill-informed wallies, whose level of knowledge is in inverse proportion to the amount of piercings they have. I had one tell me that Shimano RSX didn't come in 7 speed, when it wason the bike in front of him. I don't mind someone being wrong, but being a cock when wrong and contradicting the evidence of his own eyes takes a special amount of up-yourself-ness. I don't go into either now.
