Ever 'Lost' Photos on Your Computer?

Over written data / erasure by some unknown means?
How did you get them back? I'm not talking about Recuva or any of the 'free' software available, but experiences of anyone with an 'all looks lost' scenario, (and not massively techie) that a purchased piece of software or service has helped bring them back with amazing success?
I am looking at Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery...anyone with similar nuisances to describe?
(Yes, I have backup etc now)

We need more information. How were the photos 'lost'? Do you mean you can't find the files? You deleted them? If so, how long ago? What operating system are you running?

'Erasure' is one thing since files are only marked as deleted, but the data is still intact until the file space is overwritten. Once it has been overwritten, it is gone! So, the sooner you try to restore the files, the better. Turn off the computer until you are ready to attempt that because there are always things going on in the background which could dump all over the old files.

recovering deleted files (regardless of content) even with purchased software is not, ime/imo, a non-techie job. What you can get back depends on how they got deleted. Being an ex-techie I've done this several times for various family members usually after some nobber who passes themselves off as a techie (usually at the rellies workplace) has mashed about a bit and made things worse.

This is a long time (2 years) thing. I thought it had something to do with a piece of Panasonic video software that I had installed. Not all files have 'vanished' - but most. Later dated ones have fallen foul, as well as earlier ones.
Anyway, if I click on 'Photograph File' (where all imagery is stored) a further selection of files is available, typically 'All Photos 2006' 'All Photos 2007' etc etc Hovering, or right-clicking over these files tells me the 'volume' of the contents ie: '1.16Gb' or '987Mb' - whatever space is used by the contained imagery.
Opening this 'Year' file reveals say, another 50 subtitled files ie: Ride 1 Ride 2 Ride 3 etc but the file sizes are 'empty' or 120Kb 54Kb etc.Do I assume they are 'lurking' but just unavailable to me? (and, therefore, all the usual ride suspects on here!)
