Just wondering, what would make you unlike a post that you'd previously liked unless you realised it was a mistake, you sobered up, you remembered you hate the person who posted or the poster edited the content?

But then would it be fair to unlike the poor person who's just got his/her brownie point?

By experiment, NT and I have discovered:

If the liked person happens to be online when a post is liked, they'll see the alert - if they look at the alert, then the red flash disappears.

They don't, however get an alert of 'unliking'.

If they haven't looked at the alert, and the post is 'unliked', the red flash disappears.

The number of 'likes' in their profile goes up, with a 'like', but back down again when 'unliked'.

So if someone didn't happen to be online, until after the 'unlike'. they'd be unaware of it all. And if online, they'd only notice if they were keeping detailed tabs on their 'like' count.

We can't check what happens if a like takes you over a trophy level, and then is unliked, as neither of us is near enough a level.

Just sometimes, my academic thirst for research surfaces!

Actually, no. NT had the idea to do the research, I just wrote it up - that is my strength!

We tried it with me looking out for the alert the first time. I saw and read the alert but the unlike did not cause an alert. the 'like' banner under the post just disappeared.

We then tried it again without me reading the alert and the alert came and went unread.

We then tried it monitoring the like count and, again the count went up and down without any fuss nor notification.

In theory you could go back and completely unlike all your likes and no one would notice unless they were monitoring it, both looking at their liked post or their likes count.

It would take a concerted effort to see what happens with trophies but if I remember we might try it shortly after, or just before, I get my next 'likes' trophy. That could be a while off yet though.

And what kind of insufferable narcissist would do a thing like that, I ask myself?

I did unlike something recently, because I'd liked it impulsively on the strength of some pics in it and because I like its author, but I subsequently noticed it contained an unkind dig at another friend. Other than that it's usually just a matter of having hit "Like" instead of "Reply". The damage has to be undone quickly in P&L Lite, where such a mistake might be seen to endorse endorse some kind of Melanie-Philips style foamathon.
