Every time I flush the toilet the Gas company makes money !

Had a new Combi boiler fitted on Monday , was driving me crazy as it kept coming on for a few seconds , could not work out what was wrong then I was outside using the hose and when I turned it off the boiler came on , I checked running the cold tap and same thing happened , flushed the toilet and when the cistern was finished filling the boiler came on .

So using Google I have fixed the problem but I wonder how many homes out there are using gas when running cold water and don't even know they are as the boiler is hidden away in a cupboard or in the loft .

I calculated that if an average household use the cold water 30 times a day , that's nearly 11000 times a year it could be costing them a few quid .

I made a big hole in the bedroom wall and capped off the flow and return pipes that went to the old storage tank , they had originally been capped off in the loft so there was about 5 metres of pipe which was causing the problem .

Did you change to a Combi from a standard boiler with storage tank ?

So - how does 5 meters of capped off pipe cause the problem?

Sounds like the hot and cold water pipes have been fitted backwards, it should use cold water from the mains to flush.

Not really sure , trapped air maybe , when you turn the cold off it somehow activates the flow sensor on the boiler, thinking you want hot water it starts up for a few seconds
