Evolution or Darwinism? :B)

Did the bloke who shot himself just get his fingers mixed up: Press camera button not trigger, oops. Bet he couldn't rub his tummy and pat his head.

I'm sometimes taking piccies with my SLR at a scenic location, and someone will offer to take a pic of me in the scene. They find it hard to believe that I prefer the scenery without my mugshot in the way!

One thing that really pissed me off last week, in places like the Cathedral and Alcazar in Seville, the Mezquita in Cordoba and the Alhambra in Granada, was the number of people wandering around with phone and cameras on 'selfies sticks', who would shove them in front of you when you're clearly trying to take a photo or who would stop for selfies in the most inconvenient places (i.e. doorways, on stairs or in the middle of pathways). I think they should be called 'Selfish Sticks'.

We call them prlck sticks

I went to Monet's garden some years ago, before the selfie sticks. However the problem then was people wandering around and just taking photos of everything without actually looking at anything. People were just walking up and down just snapping away. Very few actually stopping to look at the beauty they were photographing. The majority seemed like hobby photographers which is all well and good but their enjoyment was the camera, not the beauty of the gardens. What's wrong with that? Not a lot, but not hugely different to selfies in my opinion whose enjoyment is the selfie photo instead.

Yes, selfies sometimes have sticks but I that's not much worse than people walking around staring into their cameras and walking into people.

If you want to look at photos of plants, you can do that for free online. If you bother going to somewhere, ditch the camera and enjoy actually being there.

In a previous generation's grumpy take on this sort of thing, my mother used to bemoan the fact that people seemed unable to simply enjoy being somewhere/witnessing something - they had to take photographs. She swore that she passed a fat American couple on the way up to the Parthenon once, and heard the woman rejecting her husband's insistence that she keep going: 'You keep going, and take a photo - I'll have a look when we get back to the hotel.'

I'm a bit like that at airshows sometimes. And I do like taking photos of flowers, but I also enjoy the garden visits for their own sakes.

I've been to friends' weddings where all seems to be arranged for the photographer - as if getting the photos is the main point of the day...
