I have 3 jack russell dogs (inc. 3-week old puppy) and walk along a shared footpath twice a day. There is a white line painted down the middle of the path and in places there is not enough room for users to pass each other without one or both using the grass. My dogs are on a short lead and given the chance they would chase the cyclists as they are less than one year old.

Dogs tend to do that sort of thing. If you are a cyclist and you ride on a shared path then you have to make allowances for pedestrians, with prams, dogs, shopping, whatever. If you ride so fast as to kill a dog then you are quite simply riding dangerously and quite rightly you could be prosecuted yourself. Just slow up or ride on the road. That's what I do

the problem with dogs is (some of) their owners. i would bring back the dog licence with compulsory microchipping and, if feasible, dna taken. dna from crap left on the pavement could identify the dog via dna and a fixed penalty notice issued to the owner through the post. dogs found wandering unattended could be scanned and a similar fixed penalty sent. dogs found without a chip would be passed into the hands of dog charities (who would chip it etc before rehoming it).

the cost of all this would be paid for by the dog license fee, which might in itself deter some of those people who get a dog and then don't look after it in the first place. the benefit for the decent dog owners is that they don't get tarred with the same brush as the irresponsible ones.

Hurrah!! A most sensible post Mr A.

Could they also extend it to the identification of cat shoot and punishment by death of said feline offender?? ;) ;)

no, the law would prevent that as it stands as cats are considered feral/vermin, whereas dogs are not.

Any dog owner who doesn't clean up their dog's mess should have the turds forced down their throat. I'm sick of dog crap everywhere. Anyone who has played football or rugby will tell you that there's ofter an interrpution while some goes off in search of a poo stick to get rid of the offending item(s). Rub their bloody faces in it.

No that is not correct. Cats are classed as free-roaming and are not considered vermin.

There are no laws regarding cats and fouling. A cat holds a unique position in law in that the owner of the cat is not held to be responsible for the consequences of any trespass by the cat. It is an offence to put down poison or set snares for a cat.

In France I was nipped by a hunting dog that was determined to stop me. Being a big bastard it was tall enough to reach my hand on the bars.

I was livid and went down the row of houses asking for the owner. At the house there was no chance of them denying it as the dog went in and hid under the table. I think they got the message.

Ha! Fantastic ranting. Unseen stealth cyclists, killing our pooches.

Faces in faeces?

Last year I was cycling along the Worth Way from East Grindstead, it was getting dusk, some way in front of me I saw a man on one side of the track, and on the the other side I saw a dog, the man kindly stepped back out of the way and told the dog to stay.
What he forgot was the dog was attached to him by a extended lead, and what I had not seen was the extened lead, what I did see was a dog take flying lessons as the lead was scoped up by the front wheel luckly for me up onto the headstock, the net result was the dog was flung acoss the track with some force, luckly fo rme it was only a small dog, apart from the dog being really shaken, and his master very apologetic, no one was hurt.

But it does seem to be a problem here ib Crawley, where a few of our cycle paths are shared, Doggie owner dont seem to understand there responsiblities, towards cyclists.

Haha, I should put my bike on a lead, run along with it, let it off the lead and let it crash into someones dog, then say my bike was just being friendly!

I ride that route on my mountain bike now and again. It's always got dogs running around so you need to be careful and aim correctly to make sure you get them properly

I live in Crawley. I am a cyclist and raced at a very high level. Cyclists who use shared footpaths are a menace. Get on the road!

Come round my way and do that to my dogs and you'll spend the rest of your days on two wheels alright, but you'll be using your hands along the rims. Get it?
