A bunch of us are going on a cycling holiday to the Alps based roughly at the foot of Alp d'huez. 4 are driving all the way but 4 of us are flying to Lyon and then travelling on from there.

Anybody have any experience of the best way of getting from Lyon airport to Bourg D'oisans with a bike box?

Currently we are mulling over hiring a large van type thing at the airport and driving the rest of the way.

Cheers Ant.

oops I have misspelled Bourg in the title but can't seem to change the title!!

Hi Ant

Exactly the same dilemma here.

We started off planning to fly into Grenoble then discovered it's really only a winter ski airport. We're all cycling to Grenoble from Lyons. We believed the best non cycling method was to TGV from Lyon to Grenoble without unpacking the bikes and then either taxi or cycle the 50k to Bourg.

Interested to see what your solution is.

Hi Chris,

We looked at TGV or even Bus to Grenoble and then bus to Bourg from there. The guy from the chalet said he will pick us up in his trailer but it all sounds a bit of a faff really.

We are pretty sure we can fit 4 people and all 4 boxes in a Merc Viano or a Renault Traffic (one of the others is going to check for sure though), so it looks like we will hire something. Should work out to be about £100 each but the other option above isn't going to be too far from that price anyway. Plus we can then just travel door to door without any hanging around between timetables!

What will you do with the boxes/bags after you have unpacked your bikes? I doubt you will fit one of them in a pannier or saddle bag! EDIT - scrub that I have just read it on your blog thingy!

Just need to get some training in now!! :training:

I've Flown into Lyon to go to Grenoble a few time when working and eventually started using the bus, its pretty easy - not sure if they would take bikes though. From Memory they do have a large luggage compartment under the bus. (pls double check this before going though!!)
