Experiment - Waving not drowning

I'm gonna say eff you to every cyclist I see on the way to work today, I'll let you know what happens!

Has anyone seen @winjim since? When do we start phoning around the hospitals?

So we can safely conclude that 40% are proper cyclists who nod and 60% are silly weirdos that shouldn't allowed into our group.

I think there should be some sort of campaign, maybe radio or TV, advising cyclists of the correct etiquette. When we get our act together, it would go some way to demonstrating to drivers that we are a civilised bunch and care should be taken around us. I'm thinking something along the lines of...

Be a proper cyclist, be a safe cyclist, nod hello. If you don't, you're only making it more dangerous for the rest of us.

I give a nod and a enigmatic smile - that way if there's no response I don't look like a nobber.

I, too, am in the nod and smile category, and for the same reasons. Unless it's a sunny day and I'm going downhill, in which case everybody gets a big fly-catching grin just because.

I am going to try a new tack and wave and say hello to all drivers and pedestrians too. Let's see what reaction I get. Being serious, it would be nice if cyclists acknowledged each other, I do like having a bit of affinity with other people doing my sport. Plus it gives me a sense of security that someone might come to my aid if I needed it.

I think this may be where the point is being missed. At 7am this morning, I wasn't participating in a sport. I was going to work using my choice of transport.

I'm a bit disappointed in this thread after been called to it.

For one, it's my big lumpen norvern friend who started it.. two.. he's a big moaning minnie anyway. Three. He's not actually crying into his bidon that some other cyclist didn't return his greeting then posting about it on the forum as if it's the end of the world.
Therefore, no Kerching.

But there's time yet...

On my commute in I have quite a rapport with three of the lollipop ladies I pass (road safety stick operatives?) and exchange cheery 'hellos' with all of them, or a wave/nod if they are chatting to someone else.

What? You weren't being serious? You don't live in a Norfolk village then (actually it depends a bit on which village and which day - I don't wave to everyone driving on the A10 or A148, but I do say hello to most pedestrians on the A10 and I did greet most people when I was riding around near Sandringham in fancy dress )

I don't do sport, but I'll still ask a stuck person with a bike if they're OK. I was happy to answer a few questions from a tourist who'd ridden into Lynn from Hunstanton (and beyond in previous days) on a Surly LHT and was locking up at the cycle park when I was leaving market.

My sons and I probably got passed by around 100 cyclists on the way up Box Hill on Sunday, and about as many on the other bits of the RideLondon course.

I'm extremely grateful that I wasn't expected to wave or return a "hello" from each of them,

In fact apart from exchanging a few pleasantries with a young lady stuck with us in the Esher traffic jam I don't think we spoke to anyone except each other, but then we're miserable gits.
