As luck would have it, I'm looking for some new clobber for an up-coming wedding, and an advertisement caught my eye last night:

"Bespoke suits, less than half price, whilst stocks last!"

How does that work then?

Right from what I can remember. A group of tailors in Savile Row lost in a court ruling on the use of "Bespoke".

They were arguing that for a garment to be "bespoke" everything from the cutting of the cloth had to be done to an individual’s measurement and by hand. The other side was arguing the cutting of the cloth did not need to be included.

So what happens today is.
Large amounts of cloth are cut into "blanks" by machines, according to a set pattern, and I believe partly made up. When a customer is found these are then partially tailored to meet their measurements and because of the lost case these can be sold as "Bespoke"

Aha! thank you. I too was under the impression that bespoke should mean made specifically for, rather than altered to fit.

I'm off to look at their website now then...
