Maz,it might be worth taking the key back to your local Toyota dealer - get a replacement for free and let them know about the fault on the keys.

No, take the car back, and say it's simply incompatible with the key

My car has remote central locking. This weekend the key exploded. I kid you not. I pressed the 'lock' button on the key...the metal shaft of the key shot out and the plastic part you hold was shattered. Unbelievably, the key still works, but it's held together with tape now.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I actually googled "car key explode" last night to see if this was a common phenomenon. I can now expect the bizzies to come knocking down my door in the early hours.
