I went off on the wrong point then.

You could do the same with a front light to get you seen better, but then its pointing at someones face, see the point? Defused over a larger area is nice, although I don't think that a black tarmac one is the answer.

Although looking at a glowing red rear wheel and road gives a nice (maybe secure) feeling

I suppose it all depends on whether the more powerful light, pointing downwards, makes you more visible than an equivalently bright light pointing straight.

If it does, I suppose it's worth the waste of energy!

Is that Flare as bright as that? That's impressive.

I'm still thinking of getting one, BTW, but I will get the Beacon cover with it if I do.

I use the old redeye cable one (before they changed the cover to transluscent for side vis) and driver friends have said how visible I am when they see me.. during the day rides.

On the seatpost, even angled down it is that bright that it lights up my pannier rack and is visible behind. In fact you shouldnt mount it at the top of a seatpost if you ride high as you will actually dazzle drivers/other road users.

You can also make a shim with some innertube if your seatpost is particularly sloped. Not that you really need to.

To be honest not really worried about battery run times [8hrs on rechargeables] or the angle of the dangle, comment on getting home tonight after a long commute was that ALL cars gave her a wide berth. If this light alerts drivers that there is a bike around the corner on a dark country road that will do for me.

Take a look at one in the dark.

This is our Ben's Dinotte. I think the red patch is pretty visible across a pretty impressive area-
The other great thing about the Flare is that when it's on flash it also has a constant background light - it's on constant half brightness and flashes full brightness at the same time. This gives you the advantages of both solid and flashing lights in one unit.
Aye, the MaxxD and Joystick does that too. It's bloody handy as it means the battery life is immense whilst still giving you a fair amount of constant light.
