Why do the kind of drivers that behave like arrogant tw@ts towards cyclists only ever do it when they know they can immediately get away???

I had such an encounter earlier today ... two lanes merging into one (right hand merges into left hand lane). So I am in the left hand lane already (I have priority). Just as I am almost into the single lane section, @rsehole wearing suit, sunglasses and driving a top-notch super-expensive BMW beeps at me and almost flattens me when he misses me by a matter of milimeters when overtaking at the last minute coming from the right hand lane into my lane. Of course I shout at him, so he gives me the finger and drives off.

Now ... would he have done that had he not had a clear escape route? I think not ... I am 6'0" tall, almost skinhead (very short hair), not huge ... but not small either! Clearly able to handle myself.

B@stard coward BMW driver! I thought his lovely beamer would have looked even more lovely with the wing mirror hanging off, but sadly I never got the opportunity to find out.

I have never ever once been acosted / driven at aggressively by anyone when they have had no escape route. Never once. They are all bloody cowards.

I had a fella pull out on me, I made the 'hurry up' hand signal and shouted "Oi"..... I got the finger back, but he didn't even look at me when we were in traffic 200 yards down the road. He then got the evils from me, and gave a wide berth when he passed later.....

I was in Lowestoft the weekend before last and saw a very similar incident to yours - but it was a VW Passat - left about 1mm clearance between him and a yellow Giant road bike, then gave the cyclist a 2 finger gesture. Trouble for him was getting stopped at the Oulton Broad level crossing. The cyclist - tall and big bloke with very short hair rode past in a low gear about 3mm closer to the car than when he'd been passed.

Don't think I'd have ever had the nerve, even when young and super fit, and not sure if I approve or not, but can't say I can blame the cyclist. (Last seen doing a 1 finger salute to the car driver).

The car driver didn't get out to argue either, which kind of proves your theory about cowardice. Saw the side of the car when I went up the inside of it (in my car) at the roundabout - and laughed.

I had someone pull out on me, but they got stuck in traffic lights up the road. He wasnt expecting me to catch him up at all.
I said about him passing close, but he wouldnt look, so i knocked on his window, and he still wouldnt look. Knocked abit louder and he still wouldnt look. Then the lights changed and he went off.
Im not really a big lad either.
I also had a chav in a car who came past me just before traffic lights, so i went infront of him, he revved his engine up so i told him not to do it. He was then all nice. Got to the second set infront of him, his lights changed and off he went, with the threats of him beating me up

I'm glad it's not put you off cycling. IME it's chavs in Corsas and Saxos who are the worst, but that could be a symptom of living in Chavenage...

My Millie seems to have less near incidents, perhaps because she's moving slightly slower than me and a little less aggressive.

that and she tends to forget and let things go so doesn't remember them later

I rode half my commute this evening with my rather long tongue stuck out like a loony and it worked, got given lots of space

drivers on my commute are starting to find out how loud i can shout - i can be heard over the radio of a car

A WVM gave me some abuse as I clocked him before he tried to squeeze by me with another WVM approaching. He thought better of it as I eyeballed him. A few seconds later he pulled by me with just enough space for me except that he appeared incandescent with rage as his arms were very animated gesticulating as he screamed abuse at me. I looked on at him impassively as he drew level with me. Then out the corner of my eye I saw a cop car turn into the road in front of us . Suffice to say he then behaved himself.

Any vehicle with a German badge on it has huge tosser potential. I have this evening seen 3 fat women eating and texting at the same time whilst driving. Saxos and Novas are generally also driven by chav tossers. Had a silver Ford Escort pull up behind me at some lights in town this afternoon.The prat has so much boom boom coming from it my rib cage was vibrating. I unclipped and looked around a few times with disdain just to make a note of the number plate and to see if it was taxed and likely to be insured. Anyway he didn't turn the aural dirrohea down so when the light turned green I set off really slowly and continued to pedal so for about 75 yds until I had reached the turn off into Sainsbury's car park. He then wheel span the car wheels further up the ring road to another red light when I was out of his way.

Heard an alarming conversation in a supermarket car park this evening as I was carring my panniers to my bike.

Fat bloke in dirty tee shirt, tracky bottoms and trainers rolls out of a 6 series silver 54 plate BMW with his mobile phone still glued to his ear. I heard him say to the person on the other end "If you can get community punishment that will be fkucing brilliant. You've done well mate. Result as the a5shole you battered won't disrespect you again. The fkercu deserved it though really didn't he. Yeah, piece of p155. Yeah a few weeks doing sumfin' in the sun won't kucfing hurt you will it?

Also saw what must have been at least 10 fat people in 15 miles either on their mobiles whilst driving or drinking or eating or texting or doing all of these and speeding all at once. A large proportion were women.

Crankarm I think you are a bit of an idiot. Just becuase some car driver has his music up loud you decide to ride ''slowly'' what is the point?? Your attitude towards fat people is worrying as well.

I just tried to read Crankarms post, and i seriously cant, not slept much.
But, if you did actually ride slow infront of someone because they had their music up, why? Its only abit of noise, and if you let them past it will be gone in a few seconds.
Or, just do what the crazy guy does that lives around here, and when people walk past say about it being a mobile disco or something or other.
