Regardless of someone riding with all the bells and whistles or not as the case may be, as a driver it is your responsibility to drive with your eyes open and see.

Absoultely. However, as a cyclist, it's my responsibility to get home safely at the end of the day. Anything I can sensibly do to make the drivers task of seeing me in good time a little easier is just good sense.

I assume you have a very persuasive counter arguement for the above statement.

And she was certainly a dozy cow, and a moron...

in which lack of hi-vis was cited as an example of irresponsibility

No it wasn't. The cyclists should not have been on the pavement at all. If they really lacked the balls to cycle on the road, then they might at least have given us pedestrians a sporting chance by a) cycling at a slow speed (no faster than people walk, for example), and b) making their presence known by having lights on their bikes, and wearing clothing that was visible on a dark autumn evening.

And, in my humble opinion, it also makes my bike ride more pleasant as I can be more relaxed if I am reasonably confident that car drivers will only hit me if they are either fast asleep or deliiberately aiming at me. Relying on other peole to have the night vision of an owl just to assert your 'right' to ride in low-viz clothing is plain daft.

Um, am I so out of date with cars? I thought they had to have two big lamps on the front to illuminate things ahead? If your headlights don't show a cyclist up fully until you are a bonnets length away, are they sufficient? And since you should drive at a speed that allows you to stop within the distance you can see to be clear, if you're lights don't show up anything more than a few feet away, you need to driver pretty slowly.

If the woman moved out to turn right without checking over her shoulder for vehicles, then that's her main fault. At such short range, I'd expect headlamps to illuminte things pretty well..

(And actually, I do wear hi-vis myself, seems to make sense, and don't care if I look like a road mender bred with a Christmas tree...)

But with regard to the OP - yeah, there are some right selfish prats out there, and you just have to hope they kill themselves before they kill someone else.

If the other road users miss my twin Dinottes and the Enduro Maxx then a HiViz jacket is not going to make any difference whatsoever!

What a fab posting! It has everything: loutish cyclists, blind drivers, umbrella-based violence, the 'highly visible clothing' question (hi-viz is such an ugly term), a dozy cow, cycle light endorsements, holiday plans, pedantry and even an appearance by the 'string police'.

Keep it up chaps!

May I also add that my posting comes from 3 miles north of the previous one, so please keep all subsequent posts in geographical order.

But not a dead one as you were driving prudently and cautiously, giving her lots of time and space, she being a lady on a bicycle, being most vulnerable. In fact you should have remained behind her to act as her Sir Gallaghad following at a discreet and safe distance to protect her from petrol head morons bombing along country roads and through 30 and 40mph limits in residential areas at 60mph, close passing cyclists, only to suddenly turn sharply left into a side road, drive way or entrance, almost knocking her down. Some people can be such inconsiderate selfish bores.
