I've often thought of deactivating but at the moment its still the most convenient way of keeping in touch with friends from various stages in my life. This is mainly because most, if not all, of my good friends live miles away so catching up down the pub isn't really an option. Facebook to me is like a virtual pub I suppose, as others have described it.

My wife and I have a running competition to see who can have the fewest friends on facebook. I've got it steady under 50, probably only 6 or 7 regulars who I keep in touch with and we share interesting stuff. I don't think I can really maintain a meaningful friendship with any more people than that but there are maybe 10-15 peripheral people who I'll check in with every now and then just to see what's going on. The rest are people who I might possibly contact at some point so I just leave them on there as friends. I could remove these people and I understand that deleting someone from facebook doesn't delete them from real life too (they still exist and are contactable!) but I just leave them on sort of like an address book rather than a collection of current and active friends

I never really got Facebook either and soon deleted everything after a month or so. I like being completely 'un Googleable' which is what I am now, after deleting Facebook as well as getting taken off that 192 thing which, I was horrified to discover, carries a hell of a lot of personal info too - (well worth checking and getting taken off it).
Only carries information you put in, ie if the date of birth you put in these facetwitter things is slightly out etc then they don't really have anything.

I never put real details on the tinterweb , and find it highly amusing getting birthday greetings on facebook several weeks after my real birthday.

delieting ones FB account is quite liberating... but in the eyes of your friends who's social lives revolve around FB, you shall cease to exist. You shall not be invited to parties, anniversaries or get-togethers of any kind, in fact you shall not hear about them until after the event. And the resounding excuse for you not being invited will be "I did put it on face book!"

It never really goes away ,, it hides in the clouds until one day you are feeling week and "just have a look" and BAM they re activate to its full former glory....

You have to dig a little bit but it is possible to delete completely (as I have done). It still gives you a nice 14 day cooling off period but after that, kaput.

Yeah, that was one of my consideration factors. My thinking is that if I have friends that won't consider me because i'm not on facebook it won't be too much of a loss.
