I've just signed up for Facebook after resisting for years, so going by past experience with technology, it's days are now definitely numbered.

Just deactivated my account

Left Facebook about 3 months ago. Got fed up of them repeatedly changing the security settings although they are apparently going to stop doing this now. A US watchdog type thingy (I can't remember the name and can't find the report on t'interweb) told them they had to. Facebook however says the change is nothing to do with the ruling.

It's this kind of attitude and their ownership of your data that put me off.

I use twitter partly because some comedians are genuinely funny (we're obviously not talking about Gervais here) and partly because there are useful bits to do with Android, London travel and national rail.

What is Twitter for? Please explain [ideally in under 140 characters].

Twitter is used a lot more for professional networking. You can reply to any post you want, just click the 'reply' button. You may not get a response but often you do.
