I use Facebook but not a lot, just to keep in contact with a small number of people. I have just been watching a program on TV about FB and I hadn't realised just how intrusive this network is. I can understand being tracked whilst logged into Facebook but can/does Facebook track your online activities when not logged into Facebook?

Yes, people tried to tell them off for it but the just kept saying it wasn't in their jurisdiction.

I would never touch facebook with a bargepole. Same with google, apple and microsoft. I also host my own email because I got sick off all the companies scanning my emails to advertise to me.

A supplementary question if I may. Are the tracking cookies browser specific? So, if I live my life via Chrome, can I keep FB in the dark about my other activities by only visiting FB on Mozilla?
Mainly what are used are "flash cookies" AFAIK. They are not browser specific.

I closed my Facebook account down about six month back.
Though recently I clicked on a Facebook link and I got signed in :-( Next thing Im getting emails from facebook. Turns out my account was active
I've closed the account again. Says in 14 days the account will be removed if I don't sign in.

Just use a cookie blocker and allow/disallow what you feel happy with. If you're using IE then you'll need to use a decent browser that allows such things

No I've not. Pretty scary concept.
To be honest tho, I don't really care what tracks me doing what as I think that if you go on the Internet you're in a public domain anyway. If you don't want it out there, don't put it up there.

I use the 'disconnect' Firefox extension it links to. Blocks third party sites from tracking you with Facebook but still lets you use the fb site itself should you want to

I'm an occasional facebook user, I watched the program as well, It was fascinating to see how the advertising worked, though I bet they didn't show everything. I'm using Ubuntu and firefox, I have firefox set to delete cookies when I close firefox, I'm also running No Script, Ghostery and Better privacy. Normally the only E-Mails I get from Facebook are the ones informing me I've just logged on.
