As for Fairytale of New York, I quite like the Christy Moore version.

I rate the original, although when they did it live, it showed everything which was wrong with The Pogues. A unique voice attached to a unique performer.

Noooooo ... not only is it the finest christmas song ever, it's on my list as being one of the finest songs ever. Everything about it is perfect. Except the fact that Ronan F**king Keating covered it.

It is a reasonably strong contenderer for best 'contemporary' christmas song. I think you'll find the best christmas song ever is, in fact, Silent Night.......... by Sir Cliff Richards .

Fairytale of New York is a very good book by J P Donleavy. Really entertaining stuff. Most of J P Donleavy's work is good, but I especially enjoyed The Singular Man, The Ginger Man and the above mentioned Fairytale. Highly recommended.

Ronan F**king Keating (to give him his full title) is the singer from some boy band or other - I think Boyzone - who has covered The Pogues' song "Fairytale of New York" which is named after Donleavy's book. And he's made a pretty depressing job of it, turning it into a syrupy Oirish thing such as you might find in a Magners' cider advert.
