And that is a measure of what?

Political inclination and culture.

I remember the story of a young female singer who was flying to a concert along with a few "A list" celebrities

She was taken under the wing of a very well known female actress (but wouldn't name her)

The Actress explained that she would et them an upgrade on their flight tickets and went up to the counter and asked firmly for an upgrade... and was turned down

The Actress then asked "Do you know who I am"
The Guy behind the counter simple answered "Yes"

Which really rather ended the conversation

The singer said that she learnt at that point that no matter how famous YOU think that you are, there is someone else who will think that you are simply a normal person.

I had never heard of Phil Wang before ,but I'm glad I have now.
As for "who she/he ?" ,it happens all the time when I read posters for plays or musicals.
Which proudly proclaims it is starring some bloke from Eastenders or some woman from Holly City etc etc etc.
If they are in soaps, reality tv or farkin' Holby City and it's ilk then it's definite I've not heard of them.

The Byegad definition of 'celebrity' is:-
'Some idiot with a heightened sense of their own self importance.
We watched Celebrity Mastermind over Xmas and recognised 1 or 2 of them celebrities between us! The rest, we had no idea who they were.

Yes I've heard of her, she's been on Live at the Apollo, and various humour-panel shows. She is quite funny, but also spends a lot of time telling us how hard it is being a woman (like Jo Brand) and having a non-British heritage (like Lenny Henry).

She's quite good, and occasionally on main stream telly.

As opposed to Wayne Kerr, I've heard of him a lot but don't know anything about him.

I only know who she is because she's on the wright stuff a lot. I've never seen her in her day job.
I quite often don't know who famous people are, I think it depends what TV you watch. On the dr who thread I had to google most of the suggestions to see who they were. Some I recognised when I saw their faces, but I rarely know people by name unless they're fairly big box office draws.
