FAO Woking Knaphill Brookwood Frimley Deepcut Basingstoke Canal Users

Don't know whether you're aware or not, but the very useful pedestrian/cycle crossing outside the Total petrol station in Brookwood/Knaphill has been earmarked to be removed (as it causes a bit of a nuisance to motorists). Sadly, it is of huge benefit to pedestrians and cyclists, but that doesn't seem to matter :-(

It was built with Cycle Town money and the removal cost will be be in the thousands, which could be better spent elsewhere.

If you're a local resident and user of the canal, please sign our very short petition to try and keep the island. Please send links to cyclists in this area as we need all the help we can get.

I've signed it but I'm wondering whether I am local enough. I've used the crossing when riding the Basingstoke canal but I live about 20 miles away. Not far to a cyclist but is it "local".

Ironically, I've used that road a million times when driving (friends in Brookwood, Guildford or the in laws on the south coast) and never found it a problem.

is this the one down the road from sainsburys and before the cemetery? If not can you post a map link?

only ever cycled it on the road, but that section is always congested. has been since I remember going to my nans that way over a decade ago - well before any cycle paths and cycle lights.

Yes, as dombat says, it's the one over the Basingstoke canal and next to the Total garage on the main road.

Going from Bagshot, it's after Sainsburys, you go down a hill with a bit of a wiggle, then the canal is just before the traffic lights and going up the hill, under the railway bridge to turn left to the cemetery...

Yes that's it, the famous Fishwick island!

I think the Woking News and Mail are running a story about it this Thursday (6th Jan). Cycling has got all political in Woking, which is why we need as many cyclists as possible to have their voice heard, not just car exhausts! So please sign and send to friends.

Woking as a town is good for cyclists (obviously because it's a cycling town). Anyone seen those new "be bicycle aware" signs on roundabouts? I think they're good as they pretty much cover the most important points and can be quickly read when waiting to get on the roundabout. Not sure if they make cycling safer, but they make me happy

I went to the island this morning (sat 15th Jan) with a friend and in two hours (9-11am) we collected over 60 signatures between us. It was cold, windy, overcast so a pretty good turn out. Only one lady went a bit mental and aggressive, the usual "get out of my way", "lycra louts" and "ringing your bell is the same as shouting get outta my way". I think she's read too many copies of the Daily Mail. Overall a very good response.

If anyone wants to still sign the petition, it will be closing fairly soon. Every signature counts!
