He was my MP when I was a kid in Leeds. He came to my primary school and sat playing the piano for my class whilst giving some of us a chance to sit at the instrument and play a duet with him (poke an appropriate key each time he nodded). I remember him as a really nice chap who was fun to spend time with.
A full worthwhile life, and he seved his country well.

And mine. I had a lot of respect for him. His autobiography 'The time of my life' is a very good read.

Velvet Curtain - where did you grow up? I lived in Crossgates then Halton and went to St Theresa's then St Mary's College.

I was in Roundhay, it was Asket Hill school in possibly 72 or 73. I don't think the school is there now, I moved south when I was 10.

Oh, the constituency was bigger than I thought.

I remember him saying on the radio a few years ago that he became very fond of, and friendly with, Margaret Thatcher in their dotage. I'm not sure if I was impressed or appalled!

I'm not really into politics, but i remember him being one of a few from that era on both sides that actually had balls, unlike the wet farts who we have had to endure since the mid 1990's, and can't make a decent decision between them.
